Frequently Asked Questions about Academic AdvisingWho is my academic advisor? Your advisor is assigned based on your major or your departmental assignment. The specific name of your advisor can be found in the top right-hand corner of your Academic Advising Record in ISIS. If you do not find an advisor’s name on your Academic Advising Record, you should contact the department to which you are assigned. The department will identify and assign your advisor. Students assigned to the Department of Basic Studies will see an advisor in that department regardless of the selected major. Why should I see an academic advisor? The academic advisor provides students with the information needed to complete the selected degree or program of study in a timely manner. Academic advisors can assist students:
How often should I see my advisor? Students are required to see an advisor before each registration period. During the advising session, the academic advisor will release the advising hold that is automatically placed on each student’s record each term. It is important to schedule your advising appointment in a timely manner. Your advisor is also available to assist you with academic questions (i.e. course withdrawal, degree program requirements, etc.). If I am preparing to register for the upcoming term, when should I plan to contact my advisor to schedule an appointment?
Contact the department or advising center to which you are assigned to find out when advising will begin for your major. The University does have a designated advising week during the fall and spring term. This is typically the week prior to the beginning of the early registration period. Student advisement for early registration for summer (2008) and fall (2008) semester is March 31 – April 4, 2008.
